Next, I am going to explain 5 rules that you must take into account in your writings, whether they are informal writings or important work. They are basic, simple, and elementary rules.

Personal Pronouns are Used

When you choose a personal pronoun, it will have to depend on what you are writing at that moment, you must take into account the reason and motive for your writing. For example, if you are writing an essay where your personal experience is the most important, when writing your views, it will be almost impossible not to use the “I”, since avoiding it in those contexts can create confusion in reading. But instead, when you are writing a critical essay, then you will have to use the third person singular or plural to be able to explain the different points of view.

The Number of Paragraphs will Depend on the Type of Text

There are those who think that a text or essay has to have only 5 paragraphs so that it is suitable for the reader and that it is not too short or too long. This theory is so because a text must be made up of the introduction, the body of the text, and the conclusion, but the reality is that there is no paragraph limit in writing, much less when more complex topics must be addressed.

The Sentences of the Paragraphs Do Not Have to Be the Same Number

The same thing that happens with the number of paragraphs, there are those who think that a suitable one should only have between three or five sentences. The reality is different, since although paragraphs of a similar size are visually easier for the reader, the sentences will depend to a large extent on the topic of the text and on how much must be explained in a paragraph to demonstrate or support a main idea before proceeding to the next to avoid confusion.

Correctly Use the “And” and the “But”

I remember how in a language class at the University this was a topic of controversy. Some bet that “and” and “but” could not be used at the beginning of a sentence because they should only be used to join phrases or words within a sentence. But there are many times that can be used to show a previous thought in a sentence or a contrary point of view, as I have just done in this sentence.

Beware of Repetitions in the Same Sentence

It is necessary to avoid in any written text (and any spoken sentence) repeating a word or part of a phrase in the same sentence or paragraph because it can make reading very difficult. Only key words or phrases will be allowed to be repeated in a paragraph to emphasize a main idea to the reader, as long as the text does not lose coherence.
